A Brief History of Piney Mountain UMC
This church of God, named for a nearby mountain, was organized in 1878 as part of the Southern Central Conference. A wooden church was built on land deeded to the church by Uriah & Rebecca Warren. The first minister was Rev. Mark W Broyles.
Additional land was acquired from the Warren & Miller families for a cemetery. Fire was a destructive factor in these early years and three wooden churches burned.
A brick building was dedicated in 1945 and still stands today. Fire stuck again in 1999, but only damaged the interior and roof. A former Lay Leader, Sue Howell, provided funds in her will to build a new fellowship hall, narthex, pastor's office and bathrooms, which was dedicated Easter Sunday, 2004.
Piney Mountain UMC, now part of the Hominy Charge, has long been active in the community as acaring, spiritual center.
